The new face of enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli infections

While investigating the above noted GE outbreak, all 116 young cases patients (16-40 years) were hospitalized. Of these, seven were referred for renal failure due to oliguria and one for Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) to a tertiary reference center in Chandigarh, Union Territory. 

In addition to watery diarrhea (71/116, 61%) and bloody diarrhea (45/116, 39%), case patients presented mainly with abdominal pains (87/116, 75%).  Neurological symptoms ranged from stupor to hysterical fits. Usually, O157 H7 strains of E. coli are strongly associated with beef associated GE outbreaks.
